Gorgeous Balinese henna cake

This cake was another labour of love… My best friend’s wedding cake!

Finished cake:

The cake in situ’ with curled purple wire, fresh orchids and hand painted, henna design stones around the base.

Close up of the henna design:

The design of this cake had many sources of inspiration.

Lisa had seen my henna wedding cake on display years before and loved how well the mehndi art works in icing!

Lisa had also seen many conical cakes and loved the shape.  Like this one from ‘the cake diva’ but wanted a more unusual, contemporary design.

We searched the internet for beautiful henna designs like these

The cake was 6 tiers of different fillings, chocolate, triple choc, madeira, carrot, gluten free banana and pineapple and a vegan sponge.

They were hand carved into the cone shape.

All tiers were on their own boards and iced on top. I then marzipanned it in 2 halves and then iced it as 1.

The henna pattern was piped on freehand in royal icing.

This cake took me 2.5 days (working about 8 hours a day) because of the level of piped detail, but I really enjoyed doing it and it was one of the most admired cakes (if not THE most!) I have ever made.
